FOOD SAFETY SYSTEM CERTIFICATION (FSSC 22000)

What is Food Safety System Certification (FSSC 22000)?
In this world of a growing population, the need for affordable, safe, and good quality products is a rising concern. With this objective in mind, FSSC 22000 works closely with GFSI on providing a trusted brand assurance platform to the consumer goods industry. FSSC22000 is one of the Global GFIS recognized scheme which is widely used by many industry players.

FSSC 22000 is a Food Safety Management Certification Scheme, managed by Foundation FSSC 22000 and governed by an independent Board of Stakeholders which consists of representatives from several sectors in the food industry.

To ensure transparency and involvement of the industry, an Advisory Committee is meant to make recommendations regarding a number of topics, including technical aspects like unannounced audits & Food Fraud, guidance documents and scheme revisions. The Advisory Committee reports to the Board of Stakeholders.

FSSC 22000 is used to control quality and food safety risks along the supply chain. The FSSC 22000 system uses a management systems approach to food safety, using ISO 22000 for the management system requirements and ISO Technical Standards (for prerequisite program requirements).

It is developed for the certification of food safety systems of food manufacturers that process or manufacture animal products (not including slaughtering and pre-slaughtering), perishable vegetal products, products with a long shelf life and (other) food ingredients like additives, vitamins and bio-cultures, food packaging, consumer products, animal feed etc. With these coverages, FSSC has provided a comprehensive coverage along the supply chain.

The FSSC 22000
certification scheme has been given full recognition by the Global Food Safety Initiative Board of Directors. This follows an extensive benchmarking process using the requirements laid out in the GFSI Guidance Document Version 5, and an addendum which was issued in December 2009.

With the upgraded version 5, the scheme enable an easy integration for other management systems such as ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO 45001.
